Graphene is set to become the leading nanomaterial for commercial applications with its spectacular properties which has attracted interest from scientists and engineers the world over. Graphene’s potential applications are vast and ever-growing; it could be used to develop super light-weight cables, satellites and aircrafts, smartphones, ultra-thin displays, transparent touch screens, and the world’s fastest transistors, to name just a few. However, despite its potential uses, graphene must overcome a series of practical challenges before it can make its way into full-scale production.
One of the critical challenges in commercializing graphene is how to produce standardized material in high quality, at the lowest possible cost, and, in a scalable manner. As the quality of graphene plays a crucial role, the presence of defects, impurities, grain boundaries, structural disorders, and wrinkles in the graphene sheet can have an adverse effect on its electronic and optical properties. Some of the solutions to address these problems lies in the development of innovative graphene synthesis’, where graphene can be synthesized in various ways and on different substrates.
Given the immense potential of graphene for commercial and strategic applications, the automotive sector is actively pursuing the research and development into new graphene synthetics, and with the development of more practical and useable solutions, the global graphene market is projected to grow to US$700 million by 2022 at a Compound Average Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 58.7% within a period of 5 years. It is further estimated that the production volume of graphene is expected to reach 573 Tonnes by 2022 alone.
